Riverdale Park is a large park spanning the Lower Don River in Toronto, Ontario, Canada between Cabbagetown to the west and Broadview Avenue in Riverdale to the east. At the same time, there is increasing awareness that the pace and intensity of development in Toronto requires a counterpart—greenspace—to complement the urban core. This walk begins along the West Don River, crosses to the East Don River and then passes the Forks of the Don where the two tributaries unite to form the Lower Don River. While there is little archaeological evidence in the Don valley itself, regional finds in the Great Lakes St. Lawrence area have revealed that permanent settlements started to occur about 6000 BP. Currently the valley site is occupied by the Todmorden Mills Heritage Museum and Arts Centre, which includes the museum, art gallery, a theatre and a forest preserve. An easy 65 minute drive from Melbourne will transport you to the wonderful adventure that is the Yarra Valley. After viewing the surroundings, head back along Thorncliffe Avenue to Cambridge Ave. Don River Valley Park. It was discovered in 1886 during road building just east of Riverdale Park. Despite the challenges associated with this urbanization, the landscape of the Don River is slowly being regenerated and revitalized.
